AIT POLLUTION IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC IN 2000

Czech Hydrometeorological Institute - Air Quality Protection Division

2.2.1 Prague

Sulphur Dioxide

The Capital City of Pragues air pollution with sulphur dioxide in 2000 can be seen from maps of the fields of annual arithmetic means and 95th percentiles of sulphur dioxide concentrations with presentation of measured values at stations (Figs. 2-3 and 2-4).

The 2000 air pollution caused by SO2 was markedly below the limit values. Annual arithmetic mean of SO2 concentrations ranged about 10 μg.m-3 at all AIM stations, i.e. they were below one quarter of the limit value. Similarly as in 1999 the highest daily concentrations did not reach the limit values at any of the AIM stations (Tab. 2-14). In 2000 the decreasing trend of air pollution caused by SO2 continued. This decline is illustrated also in maps of fields of concentrations of 1999 and 2000. In 2000 only low concentrations (up to 15 μg.m-3) were measured on the entire Pragues territory.

Suspended Particulate Matter

The Capital City of Pragues air pollution with SPM in 2000 can be seen from spot symbol charts of annual arithmetic means, 95th percentiles of SPM concentrations and 90th percentiles of PM10 fraction (Figs. 2-5, 2-6, 2-7).

One part of the centre of the Capital City of Prague (Fig. 2-5) was, with regard to the level of SPM concentration values measured and to the current limit values exceeded at two Public Health Service stations, the most affected area in the Czech Republic in 2000, similarly as in the previous years. On the other hand the remaining parts of Prague, and namely the uptown ones, recorded relatively low levels (below one half of the annual limit value). At two stations, Svornosti in Prague 5 and Sokolovská in Prague 8, significant annual limit value exceedences were registered again. These stations are situated in highly exposed localities where the direct impact of traffic is encountered. The exceedence of daily limit values in more than 35 cases per year (see Tab. 2-2) in PM10 fraction was recorded at Vršovice in Prague 10 AIM station. In 1999 and 2000 the SPM air pollution in Prague was quite comparable, slight increase of PM10 concentrations was recorded at several AIM stations.

Nitrogen Oxides

Map presentations of annual arithmetic means and 95th percentiles of nitrogen oxide concentrations using spot symbols illustrate each of the measuring sites in Prague in 2000 (Figs. 2-8, 2-9).

The Capital City of Prague, in particular the city centre, reported the highest values of NOx in the Czech Republic in recent years caused by the rising traffic density. (This is due to the fact that the main traffic arterial road passes through the city centre.) The city centre recorded higher NOx concentrations than the outskirts also due to the higher share of build-up areas and worse ventilation. In 2000 the daily limit values were exceeded again at most Prague stations in the amount exceeding 5 % of all cases. Extremely high values of air pollution in exposed localities were recorded (similarly as in recent years) by the Public Health Service station Svornosti in Prague 5 and by the Sokolovská station in Prague 8. NOx concentrations at Svornosti station double-exceeded the current limit values repeatedly. In the both cases stated, it was above all the direct impact of the traffic that caused these exceedences. It can be stated that similar high NOx concentrations may be recorded in the vicinity of other communications in Prague, heavily influenced by the traffic (e.g. 5. května, Veletržní, Evropská). This situation is confirmed at other two AIM CHMI stations, Smíchov and Mlynářka in Prague 5, located in the vicinity of communications with heavy traffic, at which the annual limit values were also exceeded in 2000. The 2000 NOx air pollution levels in Prague are comparable with those recorded in 1999; a slight increase was registered in absolute values of the concentrations measured. This was also caused by episodes with deteriorated meteorological and dispersion conditions at the end of the year 2000 (see Chapter 2.4).

The decisive proportion of nitrogen oxides in this areas air pollution should be noted; see the graph of annual courses of daily concentrations of the above substances at selected stations in Prague (Fig. 2-10, 2-11). This situation is obvious especially at stations classified as traffic (T/U/, see the Explanatory notes to the tables of annual courses); at these stations a significant proportion of PM10 or SPM concentrations was reported as well.
