The beginnings of organised hydrological service in Moravia date in the second half of the 19th century. At present, the activities of regime hydrology for South Moravia are centred in the Hydrology Department, while operative hydrology tasks are fulfilled by the Regional Forecasting Workplace of the CHMI Brno Regional Office. The extent of activity of the Hydrology Department is delineated by the Morava River catchment from the cross-section under the confluence with the Bečva River down to the cross-section at the State border with the Slovak Republic, further by the Dyje River catchment on the territory of the Czech Republic, and by marginal catchments of smaller streams that belong to the Váh catchment. The Department is responsible for the hydrology of border waters on border with Austria, and during solving of hydrological problems common with the Slovak Republic it permenently cooperates with partners from the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute. The hydrology of the complete Morava River catchment is solved by the Department in cooperation with the CHMI Ostrava Regional Office.
