Subscriptions Channel
The Subscription Channel allows you to subscribe to sets of information so you can access it easily and quickly. From the Subscription channel, you can perform the following tasks:
For each type of subscription, the following is displayed:
The subscriptions channel Edit button allows you to update all the subscriptions and unsubscribe from subscriptions.
The subscriptions channel also updates the number of hits for subscription items whenever the following conditions are met:
To Subscribe to a Category
The Subscriptions channel allows you to subscribe to a category from the Search channel. You can subscribe to a category from a Browse page, from a Search results page that show categories, or from the results page of a category search.
- Click the Subscribe or Subscribe to Category hyperlink next to the category to which you want to subscribe.
The Subscriptions setup page displays.
- Specify a name for the subscription in the Name field.
- Specify a query string, similar to a Search text field, in the Query field.
The user is alerted when a new document is added to the discussion matching the query string.
- Select the time period you want to view in the Since drop-down menu.
The available time periods are yesterday, last week, last month, last 6 months, last year, and forever.
- Specify a target category for the subscription in the category field.
- Click Finished to subscribe to the category.
To Subscribe to a Discussion
If you see a discussion you would like to follow closely over time, you can subscribe to it from the Discussions or Recent Discussions channels. Subscribing to a discussion adds the discussion to the list of subscriptions available from the Subscriptions Channel.
To Subscribe to a Discussion from the Discussions Channel
- Click the Title hyperlink for the discussion or discussion comment thread to which you want to subscribe.
- Click the Subscribe hyperlink.
The Subscriptions setup page displays.
- Specify a name for the subscription in the Name field.
- Specify a query string, similar to the Search text field, in the Query field.
The user is alerted when a new document is added to the discussion matching the query string.
- Select the time period you want to view in the Since drop-down menu.
The available time periods are yesterday, last week, last month, last 6 months, last year, and forever.
- Select the rating from the Rating drop-down menu.
Discussion comments with a Threshold rating above which subscription is valid.The rating levels available are irrelevant, routine, interesting, important, and must read with irrelevant being the lowest level and must read being the highest.
- Click Finished to subscribe to the discussion.
To Subscribe to a Discussion from the Recent Discussions Channel
If you see a discussion you would like to follow closely over time, you can subscribe to the channel. Subscribing to a discussion adds the discussion to the list of subscriptions available from the Subscriptions Channel.
- Click the Title hyperlink for the discussion which you want to subscribe.
The Discussions channel window displays the page.
- Click the Subscribe hyperlink.
The Subscriptions setup page displays.
- Specify a name for the subscription in the Name field.
- Specify a query string, similar to the Search text field, in the Query field.
The user is alerted when a new document is added to the discussion matching the query string.
- Select the time period you want to view in the Since drop-down menu.

To Save a Search
The Subscriptions channel displays a list of saved searches. If you perform a search from the Search tab and would like to save the information for future use, the Subscriptions channel allows you to add the search results to a listing of saved searches in the Subscriptions channel.
- From the Search tab and search for a document.
The search result page is displayed.
- Click the Save this Search hyperlink at the top of the result list.
The Subscriptions setup page displays.
- Specify a name for the saved search in the Name field.
- Specify a query string, similar to the Search text field, in the Query field.
The user is alerted when a new document is added to the search results matching the query string.
- Select the time period you want to view in the Since drop-down menu.
The available time periods are forever, last week, last month, last 6 months, and last year.
- Click Finished to subscribe to the discussion.
To Edit a Category, Discussion or Saved Search
Edit Subscriptions allows you to customize subscriptions. To edit a subscription, perform the following steps:
Select the checkbox next to the items (Categories, Discussions, and Saved Searches) to which you would like to unsubscribe. You may select multiple items.
Status. Uncheck this box to temporarily disable the subscription.
Name. Type the name of the subscription.
Query. Specify a query string, similar to the Search text field.
You can edit the query string. For more information, see To Edit a Query.Select the time period you want to view in the Since drop-down menu. The available time periods are yesterday, last week, last month, last 6 months, last year, and forever.

To Edit a Query
To edit query, perform the following steps:
- Click the Edit link next to the query text box.
The Search page displays along with the results of the subscription.
- In the Find text box, type the new query string.
- Check Discussions to search from existing discussions.
- Select an option from the Show drop-down menu. The options are: Full description, Brief description, and Title only.
- Click Search.
The new search results are displayed.
- Click the Update subscription link to update your subscription, or click the Save as new subscription link to create a new subscription.
The edit subscriptions page displays.
Click Finished to return to subscriptions.
